I was very pleased to wake up this morning to the news that the lovely people at the Scottish Book Trust have included The Waves Burn Bright in their list of novels to look forward to in 2016. Considering there’s new work from James Kelman, A L Kennedy and Irvine Welsh, and debuts from Helen Sedgwick and James Yorkston, I’m incredibly flattered to be featured.
My review of Colette Victor’s What To Do With Lobsters in a Place like Klippiesfontein is up on the Gutter website. I wrote it some time ago, so some of the references already feel dated – always a risk when you try and connect a novel with the immediate world it’s born into.
Along with everyone else I was shocked and saddened by the death of David Bowie. I was asked in a recent interview to define ‘creativity’ and all I could think of was him. He was the embodiment of what it means to be an artist – always innovative, never afraid to take a chance, never afraid to make a mistake, always searching for a new way to express himself. He’ll be sorely missed. RIP David Bowie.
